Seriously, Who is Elon Musk?
Who is Elon Musk?
Musk is a South Africa-born billionaire entrepreneur who serves as CEO of Tesla, a popular electric vehicle manufacturer, and SpaceX. Musk made an early fortune by founding PayPal in 1999. eBay bought the company in 2002 for $1.5 billion, and Musk made $180 million from the deal, Time Magazine reported. Forbes lists his net worth at $267.1 billion. Musk has several major companies under his umbrella, the list includes Tesla, SpaceX, OpenAI, Neuralink, the Boring Company, and Starlink, making him one of the richest men in world history.
What made him big?
How did a South African home boy become a world-famous American engineering entrepreneur? Elon Musk's story is a lesson in how a few simple principles, applied relentlessly, with luck, can become a fortune one fine day.
Musk spent his childhood with his books and computers. A small, introverted boy, he was always being bullied by his schoolmates and regularly beaten up by his classmates, until he became big enough to defend himself after a growth spurt in his teens.
Musk’s 1st milestone and he’s unstoppable
Musk moved to Silicon Valley in the summer of 1995. He registered in a Ph.D. program in applied physics at Stanford University but withdrew after only two days. His brother Kimball Musk, who is 15 months younger than Elon, had just graduated from Queen's University with a business degree and came to join him in California. The early Internet was heating up, and the brothers decided to launch a startup they called Zip2, an online business directory equipped with maps.
In due course, the brothers found angel investors for Zip2 and built it into a successful company. In 1999, the brothers sold Zip2 to computer maker Compaq for $307 million (280 million).
Elon then founded an online financial services company, X.com. Its main rival was a company called Confinity, founded by Peter Thiel and two others just months after X.com, with offices in the same building. The two companies merged in March 2000 and took on the name of their main product, PayPal, a person-to-person online money transfer service.
Another one was eBay, the online auction service, bought by PayPal in October 2002 for $1.5 billion worth of eBay shares. At the age of 31, Elon Musk, who had been the largest shareholder in PayPal with 11.7% of its equity shares, found himself holding $165 million worth of eBay stock.
Climate risk- bye-bye Earth
Tesla Motors, SolarCity, and The Boring Company are aimed at addressing climate risk by accelerating the transition to clean electricity and electricity-powered transportation.
Single-planet dependency risk. According to Musk, humanity's long-term survival is at risk if it stays limited to just this one planet. Sooner or later, some disaster, maybe an asteroid, supervolcano, or nuclear war will end our tenure here. Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp or SpaceX, in May 2002, to get us out from the planet. This is really thinking outside the box, lol.
Keynotes from Musk Stories
From his story, we can say that in life nothing is impossible. You don’t have to completely change the world to “do good.” But you should always try to provide real value.
As Musk has said, “If you make something that has high value to people and frankly, even if it’s something, if it's just a little game or some improvement in photo sharing or something, if it has a small amount of good for a large number of people, I think that’s fine. Stuff doesn’t need to change the world just to be good.”
Look for a positive vibe in the work you do. No matter how small, it will help you be more motivated and positive. No matter your goals in life, adopting the habits and mindset of Elon Musk will help you get there. Technology is key to all of his success. The extra effort you make today will have a big impact tomorrow.
