What Does It Takes To Be A Property Agent

Updated: Sep 13, 2020

A real estate career is one of the most challenging careers out there. It is certainly not for everyone and if this is something that you are thinking about or something you have decided on, we’re sure that you would like to know what it takes to be a successful property agent.

The definition of success is different for everyone. However, being a successful property agent does mean that you successfully close deals and are able to maintain a great relationship between you and your clients in the long run.

So, how do you become a successful property agent? What are the kind of skills do you need?

Communication

This is probably the most important skill needed for anyone that is in the position of selling anything. Every person you meet is a new challenge because everyone has a different life and they consume information differently from each other. This means that everyone you meet should be approached differently.

You need to learn what your client needs and answer their questions before they even ask you. Always communicate at every turn you get. Property leasing and purchasing involve so much paperwork so the more you communicate, the better.

Be Adaptable

Like any other job, you will need to be highly adaptable to every circumstance that might come your way. Things like your client suddenly changing their mind when a tenant has agreed to lease the apartment. Or just what happened the past few months, a full-on pandemic that has stopped and changed the way we all lived. If you are highly adaptable it would be easier for you to handle all the changes and be able to react to them in the right manner.

Punctuality

Have you ever heard the saying that “If you’re early, you’re on time and if you’re on time, you’re already late”? This is something that all agents should practice. You should never make any of your clients wait. You are dealing with so many pieces of the cog that goes into a property sale or lease and if you run late, you risk the entire deal.

Having Great Negotiation Skills

Being a good negotiator can make a big difference in your career. Negotiation skills are extremely important in this industry because you will have not only tenants trying to negotiate but even landlords too. Try these few tips to improve on your negotiating skills.

1) Always do your homework

2) See the situations in different angle

3) Clearly define your goals and your walk-away point (the minimum outcome you accept)

4) Remain calm and avoid being emotional

5) Listen and listen and listen

A Constant Learner

In an industry that changes all the time, you will need to always learn and stay on top of the current knowledge of the industry. Always look out for any policy changes or legal changes. This way you will never be caught in a position where you are not able to make the best decision because you do not have all the right information.

Great Networking Skills

Making friends, building your client list and creating your own community of clients that trust you is extremely important to ensure that you have repeat or referral clients. This is one of the easiest and fastest ways to get referrals. If you know how to network and you provide a great experience, people will not hesitate to refer you to their friends.

This is why having great networking skills is extremely important for any real estate agent.

Do you have all the required skills to become a successful real estate agent? Did we miss anything out? We would love to hear your feedback!
